Coriander seeds are the dried fruits of the plant we know as cilantro. Their flavour is mild and light and they are the basis for all kinds of curries and spice mixtures. Dry roasting coriander enhances its flavour dramatically.

There are two types of coriander seeds: Moroccan and Indian. We sell Moroccan coriander (grown in Canada), which is the more common type – the seeds are round and light brown with a warm flavour reminiscent of citrus and sage. Indian coriander is more oval-shaped and yellowish. There are subtle differences in flavour, but the two types are totally interchangeable.

Coriander seeds are easy to grind. We emphatically recommend buying whole and grinding them fresh when needed using a spice or coffee grinder or a mortar and pestle. The difference in flavour is remarkable. However, for those who don’t want the trouble, we do offer ground coriander.
