Red chile flakes are a very common generic ingredient used in pastas, chilis, Mexican foods and on pizza. They go by a lot of names, including crushed red peppers and hot pepper flakes. Red chile flakes are made from a variety of crushed chiles, including cayennes, anchos, New Mexicos, and even red bell peppers. They typically have a medium-high heat, with about half a teaspoon equalling one small dried chile.
